Decarbonization Strategy

Sustainability is at the core of our operations, both ashore and at sea. We are also committed to supporting the Principality of Monaco’s environmental vision, including the Monaco 2050 objectives, by integrating responsible practices across every aspect of our business. We carefully select proven technologies that enhance vessel performance, reduce fuel consumption, and lower greenhouse gas emissions, ensuring practical and measurable environmental benefits.

This Decarbonization Strategy outlines the organization's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy. The strategy establishes the principles, objectives, governance arrangements, and implementation framework for reducing the organization's carbon footprint while maintaining operational resilience and delivering long-term value.

This strategy applies to all business operations under the organization's operational control and, where appropriate, considers emissions associated with the organization's value chain. The strategy covers:

  • Direct emissions (Scope 1)
  • Indirect emissions from purchased energy (Scope 2);
  • Relevant indirect value chain emissions (Scope 3), where data is available and material.

The organization aims to:

  • Continuously reduce greenhouse gas emissions across its operations.
  • Improve energy efficiency and optimize resource consumption.
  • Increase the use of renewable and low-carbon energy sources.
  • Integrate climate considerations into business planning and investment decisions.
  • Enhance climate resilience and support sustainable business practices.
  • Monitor, report, and continually improve environmental performance.

The organization will establish measurable emissions reduction targets appropriate to its operations. These may include:

  • A defined baseline year for emissions measurement.
  • Short-, medium-, and long-term emissions reduction targets.
  • Periodic review of targets to reflect operational changes, technological developments, and evolving regulatory requirements.
  • Consideration of science-based methodologies where appropriate.

The organization will pursue emissions reductions through initiatives including, but not limited to:

  • Energy Efficiency
  • Improve building and facility performance.
  • Upgrade lighting, HVAC systems, and operational equipment.
  • Improve energy management and monitoring.
  • Renewable Energy
  • Increase procurement of renewable electricity where feasible.
  • Evaluate on-site renewable energy generation opportunities.
  • Investigate renewable energy certificates or similar mechanisms where appropriate.
  • Fleet and Transportation
  • Improve transport efficiency.
  • Transition to lower-emission or electric vehicles where practical.
  • Encourage sustainable business travel practices.
  • Procurement and Supply Chain
  • Consider environmental performance within procurement processes.
  • Engage suppliers on emissions reduction initiatives.
  • Encourage responsible sourcing and sustainable products.
  • Waste and Circular Economy
  • Reduce waste generation.
  • Increase recycling and resource recovery.
  • Promote reuse and circular economy principles throughout operations.
  • Facilities and Infrastructure
  • Consider embodied carbon in capital projects.
  • Improve operational efficiency of existing assets.
  • Incorporate sustainable design principles into new developments where appropriate.

The Board and senior management are responsible for providing oversight of the organization's decarbonization program.

Management responsibilities include:

  • Implementing this strategy.
  • Allocating appropriate resources.
  • Monitoring performance.
  • Reporting progress to senior leadership.
  • Reviewing opportunities for continual improvement.

Business units are responsible for integrating emissions reduction initiatives into operational activities.

Implementation will be supported through:

  • Annual emissions assessments.
  • Development of action plans.
  • Assignment of responsibilities.
  • Performance monitoring.
  • Staff awareness and training.
  • Periodic review of priorities based on business needs and emerging technologies.
Progress will be monitored using appropriate environmental performance indicators, which may include:
  • Total GHG emissions.
  • Emissions intensity metrics.
  • Energy consumption.
  • Renewable energy use.
  • Waste generation and diversion.
  • Water consumption where relevant.
  • Progress against emissions reduction targets.
Performance will be reviewed periodically and reported internally and, where appropriate, publicly. Monitoring for Continuous Improvement Continuous improvement is embedded in our approach. We actively assess new technologies and innovative solutions to improve vessel efficiency, reduce emissions, and raise operational standards across both our fleet and shore-based operations.

Managing Costs and Safeguarding the Environment

SWM entered the European Trading Scheme in 2021, reinforcing its commitment to reducing environmental waste on shore and at sea.
